Course Description

Objective:
Review primary trauma exam, skills, and resuscitation. Overview indications, risks, and benefits for advanced procedures such as central and arterial lines, chest tube placement.

Goals:
To be able to properly go through a primary and secondary trauma survey, perform EFAST exam, with ability to identify critical injuries and when to perform advanced procedures versus when to transfer or consult for higher level of care. Obtain a fundamental knowledge and hands on experience of bedside procedures including central & arterial line or chest tube placement.

Relevance:
Expand the knowledge of the surgical PA in trauma skills and advanced procedures, and to promote when to consult higher level of care or to transfer.

Expected Outcomes:
Ability for attendants to perform trauma primary and secondary exams, EFAST exam, go over basic trauma resuscitation including indications for and how to perform advanced procedures, and when to consider transfer


This activity has been reviewed by the AAPA Review Panel and is compliant with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 4 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid from 10/14/2022 to 10/14/2023 . PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation. 

Speakers

Adam DeMey, PA-C
Adam has been a PA for 11 years, receiving his Master's degree from Seton Hall University in 2011. After graduating, he was the first PA in a university hospital in emergency medicine where learned and gained the knowledge and experience in many procedures. While he enjoyed his time in the ED, his passion for being a surgical PA led him to working in different surgical specialties. From his experience in colorectal to congenital heart surgery, he landed in trauma and acute care surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Here he has the opportunity to work with APP and medical students, APP fellows, and surgical residents where he gets to teach numerous trauma skills and bedside procedures. He has a passion to inspire providers to learn through a combination of didactic and hands on experience.

Jodi Sagastume, PA-C
Jodi Sagastume is a board-certified physician assistant with 5 years of experience in surgical fields. She earned her Bachelor of Arts at the University of North Carolina in 2001. After practicing dance and pilates for many years, she went back to Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2013 to obtain her pre-requisites. During this time, she was a physical therapy aide at Craig Hospital while volunteering at Steadman Hawkins Clinic Denver in order to gain as much patient and procedural exposure as possible. She moved to Philadelphia to attend the Physician Assistant program at Salus University, graduating with her Master of Medical Science in 2016. Since graduation, Jodi has been practicing in multiple surgical specialties, currently with the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery team at the University of Colorado. She has years of experience performing advanced procedures including chest tubes, central and arterial lines, and lumbar punctures. As part of a level one trauma center, she also responds to multi-level trauma activations, performing primary and secondary surveys.

Andrea Gordon, PA-C
Andrea Gordon is a surgical physician assistant who received her degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2011. Upon graduation, she began her career at Unity Hospital in Rochester, NY as a PA for the Department of Surgery. This included involvement in many subspecialties of surgery, including but not limited to colorectal, ENT, general, neurosurgery, orthopedics, plastics, thoracic, urology, and vascular surgery. She first assisted in thousands of surgical procedures and has performed many procedures during her eight years there. In 2019, Andrea relocated to Denver, CO and continued her passion for surgery at the University of Colorado. She currently is a PA for the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery team. As Andrea progresses her career, she finds herself more passionate about promoting education through experience.
